Northstar Cadillac Engine Buildup Question – Pit Stop – Tech Q&A

I think a lot of people thought they would open all the time when ya put your foot into it, but it doesnt Heres some info for ya I hope it helps!!! Most notably, it was the first time since that the GTO was built on a platform other than the A-body. Based on the X-body chassis, the GTO package was optional on the Ventura model and included color coordinated decals, a ci 4-barrel engine, and a functional Trans Am-style shaker hood scoop. With operational characteristics similar to that of earlier Trans Am models, a larger single solenoid replaced dual solenoids to control air valve operation. However, unlike earlier Trans Am models, which used throttle position to activate the solenoids, the ’74 GTO shaker scoop used a series of electronic switches and manifold vacuum to operate a vacuum switch to produce the electrical connection for the solenoid. A temperature-activated switch mounted on the passenger side cylinder head ensured solenoid activation would only occur at or above degree coolant temperatures. A specific vacuum-actuated switch mounted within the scoop housing was connected to both a 12V lead and manifold vacuum through an electric switch mounted on the intake manifold.

The easiest way to tell them apart is with their pan shapes. But this photo also illustrates their outward appearance. CHP The password for cool ’90s street performance is Late-model automatic and manual overdrive transmissions are quickly becoming the sweethearts of the street set. Not that long ago, a fast street car meant compromises, including deep gears, high-rpm highway cruising, and poor mileage.

But the high-tech ’80s and ’90s have brought us more than just electronic fuel injection.

If you use them with the truck frame mount they will physically bolt the engine in but the motor will set to high and throw off drive shaft angles. Look at the photo I posted. The tabs sticking out the side of the frame mount have to set into the recess on either side of the engine bracket where the thru bolt installs.

The bolt only retains the mount, the tabs support the weight of the engine. This is where the mounts and brackets are most different. If mount and bracket are mismatched the thru bolt will not go in. Then if you measure the height of the bracket from where it bolts to the block to the center of the thru hole you will again find it different.

Interesting that the poly mounts I bought from energy suspension fit a little different than the stock ones.

Email A Carbureted ? What do I have to do to use a R4 trans with a carbureted engine? The trans is new enough that it has a lot of wires going to it. This time, I will use an electronic speedo. You need to distinguish between the R4 trans which can be set up to run without a computer and its later descendent, the 4L60E family which is a fully electronic, totally computer-controlled transmission. There are usually provisions to hook up a conventional speedometer cable on the lefthand side of the extension housing, although on some models, a vehicle speed sensor VSS with an additional two-wire connector replaces the conventional speedometer drive and driven gears.

By , most issues were fixed, and—particularly on units from high-performance cars like the IROC Z, Trans Am, or Corvette—the R4 now makes a reasonably strong performance trans in stock form when in good condition. Introduced in trucks in and rear-wheel-drive passenger cars in , the 4L60E and its later, beefier descendents, the 4L65E and 4L70E are fully electronic, computer-controlled transmissions. There are no TV cable, mechanical speedometer drive, or governor provisions.

The VSS connector now moves to the righthand side of the extension housing.

The factory flex fuel pump has supported RWHP and the filter has a built in regulator. Same as the Corvette. Used 2 Russell part fittings and a short section of braided stainless line that was all that was required. The S has the male quick connect outlet already, so all you have to do is snap on the Russel fitting.

There is vacuum at the mod as I unplugged it whilst running and held a fingertip over the end to check. I went ahead and got the NAPA guys to get me a new redstrip modulator 10 bucks why not since the old one is rather cruddy and already suspect. I’ll install it tomorrow, weather permitting, along with all new rubber line to the carb, just to be safe and sure. I did go ahead and screw it all the way down until it wouldn’t go any farther, then back a turn, just to see wha hoppen.

I got a little taste for how this truck should have felt since day one with the new engine! Shifted from 1st to 2nd at , HARD, never made it to third, ran out of road. Really got to hear the find its voice and I love it, can’t wait o give it a go with a properly functioning modulator. Cool, so it was the vac mod adjustment.

That Vac mod is likely just fine then, it just needed turned way inward. Which is why I suggested at least 2 full turns. That doesn’t sound to bad right now if you were on it pretty good. If it was a light throttle take off, then its shifting late and you need to back it out a little more.

Beginning in the early nineties, the 4L60E began to be the go to transmission for GM light duty cars and trucks. When comparing the TH vs the 4L60E , there are many differences. The 4L60 is essentially the same transmission on the outside as the early 4L60E. If you are looking to replace your old TH with an overdrive transmission, than going with a R4 or 4L60 is going to be a lot more cost-effective than trying to swap out for the computer controlled 4L60E.

The two biggest obstacles when putting a TH in a vehicle that originally came with a 4L60E and vice versa are: The 4L60E on the other hand is controlled by the engines computer. It is a bit easier to run a TH behind an LS series engine.

What’s Needed to Install a 700-R4 or 4L60E Trans Behind Carbureted 350?

Oct 28,  · TH Vacuum hose. What to use? Discussion in ‘The Garage’ started by khotmer, Oct 28, TH Vacume line. What to use? There is manifold vacuum (that you hook it up to), and then ported vacuum which is above the throttle blades.. You must open the throttle blades to get ported vacuum.

Member posted May 31, It’s got a 2. Some run a 2. However, when you have those same gears and put that tranny in second gear, with a 2. I have run a 2. We have raced TH ‘s in both first and second gear without problem, and the manual valve body that Scott previously mentioned would be a very good move no matter what gear you want to race your car in.

I just thought I’d offer an opinion on your final gear ratios for the length tracks that you are planning on racing on.
