When we talked to Steve, we asked for key recommendations that help someone make a successful transition back to the community. Here were Steve’s thoughts: Spend some serious time walking, almost minute by minute, through what you will do the day you leave, how you will leave, etc. Despite your best intentions, before you know it, you’ll end up in your old copping spots. Think about parts of the city that you should avoid for a while. Advertisement Professional athletes are trained to visualize every second of a particular goal, or game. They break down their movements, breathing, etc. Going through it time after time keeps a distraction or their nerves from tripping them up. Really let yourself get into the moment — see what you will see, smell what you will smell, hear what you will hear, etc. Build flexibility into your visualization.

The policy was enacted to comply with a state law requiring state agencies to give the same rights to domestic partners that heterosexual couples receive. The new rules allow for visits only by registered married same sex couples or domestic partners who are not themselves incarcerated.
Further, the same sex marriage or domestic partnership must have been established before the prisoner was incarcerated. This institution assignment occurred despite the trial judge’s recommendation that Synthia, as a transwoman, serve her sentence in a facility for women. Further, Synthia was denied sex reassignment surgery and hormones. The institutional policy, at the time, only facilitated cases which addressed conditions in which, reasonably, the plaintiff would seek sexual reassignment after the period of incarceration.
Due to Synthia Kavanagh’s life sentence, this was not a foreseeable option. Dickey, apparently ineligible for ultimate reassignment. As established by legal precedent and confirmed by policy in Canadian and British Columbia Corrections Service, the complainant was entitled to continue her hormone treatment”. For 13 years, I was on estrogen hormonal treatment and lived as a woman, in preparation for my sex reassignment surgery to correct my medical disorder.
In May , my hormonal treatment was discontinued. Prison is not generally an appropriate setting for transsexual individuals to make decisions which are irreversible. The implications of refusing access to surgical reassignment for individuals with a life sentence or prolonged incarceration are however clearly more serious.

However, if you really only want to write them to tease them or make them feel guilty for being locked up, that is a selfish reason to write and you might actually end up doing more harm than good.

You might feel like a badass in the uniform, but that felon with the makeshift knife is a real badass. See, that’s why he’s in prison.
I have been in a relationship with a great guy now for almost two years — but for the last 18 months, he has been incarcerated. We had a wonderful relationship before this came about. The incarceration was the result of something from his past years before we met that finally caught up with him and he had to make right. I stuck by his side and was the supportive girlfriend, sending letters, books, funding phone calls, visiting, etc. He will be coming home very soon, and is very excited to pretty much pick up where we left off.
He is going to be struggling to find work, a place to live he keeps hinting at moving in with me , and I am not in a place to support him either. I feel like we need to get to know each other again, date again, and see if we want to continue this commitment. I pretty much put my life on hold for him in the beginning, then realized that I needed to live my life and not wait around for him to get through this.
I am scared, nervous, and not ready to open my life up to him again like nothing has changed. I am not sure how to approach this with him, but the clock is ticking, and sooner than later I will see him face to face again. I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. And yes, you have to do it soon. Get The Weekender in your inbox:
