Campgrounds and RV parks are in the area on both sides of the border. Lloydminster is neither a border town, nor a twin city, although it does sit astride the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. The same municipal leaders govern on both sides and the legal discrepancies between the two provinces have been settled by means of its charter and various by-laws. There is speculation that the English Barr colonists who founded the settlement in would not have chosen the fourth meridian as the location for their town if they had been aware of the federal government’s plan to create two provinces, placing the provincial border through their chosen location.

The federal government intended this border to be on the 4th meridian which was meant to coincide with degree west longitude. Imprecise surveying methods led to an error in placement and by the time the error was corrected, the settlement was well-established. The village of Lloydminster, Alberta and the town of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan were incorporated separately, in and , respectively. In vain the residents petitioned the government to include the entire settlement in the newly-made province of Saskatchewan.

Over twenty years later, the unwieldy situation was resolved and the two communities became one, the 10th city in both provinces. Lloydminster has a specialized place in the oil and gas industry with methods and machines peculiar to the presence of heavy oil in large quantities. An educational initiative embodied in the Lloydminster Oilfield Technical Society OTS sponsors community activities, notably curling, a heavy oil show and a science centre where society-related meetings fill up a large part of the calendar.

The current populace has embraced their city’s unique status with the placement of four giant foot survey markers near the downtown core.

And try to give yourselves two shots at driving the Icefields Parkway – do, say, 1 night in Banff, then three nights in Jasper, then four nights in Banff or Lake Louise.

You can also stay at one of the campgrounds along the Icefields Parkway, though most are first come, first serve.
